Chapter Director's Chatter

By: Lee & Patti Kessler

The Survey Results are in!  The good news is the majority of our members like what we’re doing and when we’re doing it.  The other good news is our members want more variety. So, our staff’s direction is to “think outside the box” and come up with new ride destinations, new restaurants, and new activities.  Some of these have already been implemented – you’ve seen new breakfast and dinner locations and we’ve added a community service project to our activities.  If you have additional ideas, please be sure to share them with us.

February’s guest speaker, Courtland Nelson, Director of Minnesota State Parks, talked with enthusiasm about the varying terrains for riding around the state and what our park system offers us and our families.  We’re setting up a ride to visit a state park and have a picnic on June 12.  The parks are offering free admission that day, so it’s a great opportunity to take advantage of viewing at least one park location.

March will be Co-Rider Education presented by Kevin Heap and helps fill our on-going Education Program.  Please try to attend even if you’ve seen the materials before; refresher courses are always important.  Don’t forget that March 27 is the Medic First Aid class held at Thorensen Park (where we hold the Round Up).  If you need the course and haven’t signed up, please contact Gus or Kevin.

Stay Warm.

Rider Educator

Spring is the time to take the Experienced Rider class or other class that you chose. The Minnesota Motorcycle Safety center offers many classes so there is one for you no matter what you ride or how long you have been riding. There is the Basic Rider training course for the new or novice rider and a couple of experienced rider courses and then the Civilian Motor-Officer Course which you need three years or 12,000 miles of riding experience to take. In between those are the mo-ped class, the scooter only class and the trike/sidecar class which is new this year. There is also a class on motorcycle maintenance. The 2010 motorcycle and scooter rider resource guide lists all the classes and has information about them. You can get the guide at many bike shops or the chapter educators should have them. The MMSC Ph. is 1 800 407 6677 or go to www.motorcyclesafety.state.mn.us and get all the info you need.
